Chicago Style Hot Dog

Chicago Style Hot DogI have never had a hot dog without ketchup so I was a little leery about trying a Chicago-style dog. I found a tempting-looking photo of this hot dog in my newest Food Network Magazine and since I had nearly every ingredient, I decided to give it a try. I didn’t have poppyseed buns or cucumber spears but I had all of the other ingredients. I loved this hot dog and I don’t think I will ever use ketchup again. It had so many great flavors and textures… a little sweet, spicy, and crunchy. This was, by far, the best hot dog I have ever made at home. I am so glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone to give this one a try.

Chicago Style Hot Dog:

Ingredients:

  • 1 hot dog
  • 1 hot dog bun (preferably a poppyseed bun)
  • Sliced grape tomatoes
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Pickled peppers
  • Diced onion
  • Yellow mustard
  • Celery Salt
  • Dill pickle spear (or cucumber spear)

How to Make a Chicago Style Hot Dog

Boil the hot dog for a couple of minutes, or until done.

Place in the hot dog bun and layer it with tomatoes, relish, peppers, onion, mustard, and celery salt. Add your dill pickle on top or on the side as I did. Enjoy!

  1. I still can't believe Chicago hot dogs don't have ketchup and I live in Chgo! I love ketchup. My husband doesn't…it's a battle we have. 🙂

  2. Sounds delicious. With fall on its way I'm anticipating lot of bonfire with hot dogs cooked over an open flame (its been too humid to have a bonfire this summer). I like ketchup on my hot dogs, but I like mixing it up every once in a while too.

  3. This looks delicious. I love hotdogs, and somehow I have not managed to try a chicago dog! So aside from loving ketchup before, were there any other styles of hot dogs you really liked?

My favorite is with bacon, cheese and jalepeños!

  4. I saw these too and thought my hubby might enjoy them. Not a fan of tomatoes, peppers or raw onions so may not work for me 🙂 Just give me some ketchup on my dog please!

  5. i'm pretty addicted to ketchup on my hot dogs, but there doesn't seem to be room on this one with all that other good stuff. i'll take two, with a baseball game on the side, please. 🙂

  6. I am not a hot dog fan, but your gorgeous photo makes me want to change my mind!

Pam-is it just me, or did you change the look of your blog this morning? The font and photo size are different…

  7. I so much miss Chicago-style hot dogs. The best thing about them is that there is no single correct way to make them. As long as you pretty much have a salad on a dog and bun, you're good to go. I love mine with the pickle on the bun.

  8. Mmm!!! Whenever I have a layover in the Chicago airport, I always make sure I get a Chicago hot dog! Looks just like an original 🙂

  9. you put ketchup on a hot dog?
Here in the NYC area, we like mustard, but who's to say?
Looks yummy! I have never had a Chicago style dog before.

  10. I saw a feature on tv the other day about hotdogs in Mexico. Now you give us Chicago! Gotta do dogs. Thanks.

  11. Kim in MD,

I did change the template on my blog. I tried to keep it as close to the old one as possible.

    Russell van Kraayeburg,

I think this one is my new favorite dog but I also love chili dogs. Your favorite sounds fantastic!

    Cheers,

    Pam

  12. As a Chicagoan who loves mustard, I love Chicago style hotdogs. I think my favorite part is the non-sweet relish.

I could do without the poppyseed buns though…

And if you ever visit the city, go to Al's or Portillo's to get the best Chicago-style hotdog.

  13. Wow! Maybe it is a regional thing but I don't know any one who puts ketchup on a hot dog, only mustard. Your Chicago style hot dog looks delicious!

  14. I LOVE hot dogs and am a mustard girl all the way! The thought of putting ketchup on my hot dog gives me the heebie jeebies. 🙂

  15. If a hot dog can be gorgeous than your photo is gorgeous, makes me so hungry,lol;-)ps. without ketchup, mustard only!

  16. I grew up in Texas eating Chili-cheese dogs. My son-in-law introduced me to Chicago style dogs a few years ago. I'll never go back. They're so delicious.

  17. Ding ding ding ding…..we have a wiener!

Nice dog, Pam. (Although it blows my mind to know this is your first without ketchup.)
